The Challenge

Background removal is a common need for social media creators, small business owners, and designers, but most tools require uploading images to a server. This raises privacy concerns, introduces latency, and often results in poor edge quality — especially with hair, fur, and translucent objects. We needed a tool that was instant, private, and produced professional-grade results entirely on-device.

The Solution

We built CutOut using Apple's Vision framework and CoreML, leveraging the Neural Engine on modern iPhones and iPads. The app performs subject lifting and background removal in under a second, entirely offline. We implemented CoreImage post-processing pipelines for edge refinement and added export options including transparent PNG, custom background colours, and direct sharing. The UI is a single-screen experience — pick a photo, see the result instantly, export. Monetisation uses RevenueCat with a clean paywall for unlimited exports.

The Results

CutOut delivers studio-quality background removal in under one second with zero data leaving the device. The entire workflow from photo selection to export takes fewer than three taps. The privacy-first approach has been a strong differentiator in App Store marketing.
